With a strong commitment to preserving these majestic creatures, Protrack Rhino Task Team has been at the forefront of anti-poaching efforts, working tirelessly to combat the illegal trade in rhino horn. Volunteer Package for Conservation Patrols

As a volunteer, you will join Protrack Rhino Task Team and assist in conducting anti-poaching patrols and sweeps in the surrounding reserves. These reserves, located near the Kruger National Park, require ongoing and active anti-poaching efforts to protect their wildlife populations. Protrack Rhino Task Team aims to fill the gaps on reserves without big 5 animals that can’t afford to implement anti-poaching measures. These patrols assist in preventing and pushing basic bush meat trade out of these areas which shows a greater presence around the Big five reserves, this also assisting in Rhino Conservation.

Your role as a volunteer will involve actively participating in anti-poaching patrols on foot alongside experienced instructors and a trained dog. Prior experience or knowledge is not required, as comprehensive training and guidance will be provided. This experience offers you the opportunity to live and work as part of a specialised anti-poaching unit, serving as a deterrent to poachers and aiding in the protection of rhinoceros populations.

During the three-day rhino conservation patrol, it is important to understand that you will be immersed in the actual routines and practices followed by the Protrack Rhino Task Team. This experience aims to provide you with a realistic understanding of the challenges faced by the team during their regular operations. Therefore, all equipment, meals, and sleeping conditions will align with the established practices of Protrack Rhino Task Team, ensuring an authentic experience.

Please note that this experience may not be suitable for individuals unaccustomed to challenging conditions. Volunteers should be self-sufficient, adaptable to outdoor environments, and comfortable with basic amenities. Expectations should be adjusted, as meals may consist of simple provisions rather than luxurious options.

During the patrols, do not expect leisurely walks with frequent stops for information sharing. The focus of these patrols is primarily on detecting signs of illegal activities, such as poaching and snaring, within the reserve. To effectively cover a significant area, it is necessary to traverse distances of 12-20km on foot each day. This approach maximises the coverage area and increases the chances of locating snares, fresh human tracks, or any other valuable information.

The presence of a trained dog in the patrols adds a valuable asset for tracking and detection. The dog will help enhance the team’s ability to locate poacher hideouts, find poaching camps, and identify potential threats. You will have the unique opportunity to witness the impressive skills and contributions of these specially trained canines in the fight against poaching.

Both men and women between the ages of 16 and 50 can participate in these patrols. However, it is important to be in good health and reasonably fit, as the project involves covering extensive ground during its duration.

WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHY

HOW VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE BIGGER PICTURE

By participating in these patrols, volunteers directly contribute to the crucial mission of Protrack Rhino Task Team. The presence of volunteers, along with the trained dog, acts as a strong deterrent to poachers and aids in the removal of snares and traps. This heightened security and surveillance help protect and reduce the risk of poaching incidents. Additionally, funds raised through this initiative will directly support the training of anti poaching rangers, the care and maintenance of the trained dog, and the purchase of essential equipment required for effective patrols.

EXAMPLE OF WEEKLY SCHEDULE

During the three-day rhino conservation patrol experience, the following activities will be included:

Orientation and safety guidelines for anti-poaching field operations.
Basic training on tracking skills and techniques.
Detection and removal of snares.
Bushcraft skilIs, including camp setup and maintenance.
Fence checks and presence patrols.
Night walks during full and half-moon periods.
Deepening understanding of the threats faced by rhinos.
Learning about the local environment, including animal tracks, birds, trees, stars, and other aspects of the bush.

It is important to note that the primary purpose of these patrols is to deter poachers and remove their assets (such as snares and traps), rather than apprehending individuals engaging in illegal activities.

WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER

While on patrols, volunteers may encounter or be involved in the following situations:

Encountering live snared or injured animals in need of rehabilitation.

Brief encounters with non-rhino poachers who typically flee the area upon detection.

Discovery of hidden processing camps for bush meat, known as "Bush Kitchens."

Opportunities to witness unique or rarely documented aspects of nature due to being closely engaged with the environment and guided by experienced instructors.

WHAT TO BRING

Volunteers are advised to bring the following items:

Long, plain olive green bush pants.

Sunblock,
biodegradable soap,
toothbrush,
and toothpaste.
Comfortable and sturdy walking boots.

Four pairs of socks.

Multi-tool or knife,
spoon, fork,
and a 2-litre bottle.
Mosquito repellent.

PROVIDED EQUIPMENT

The following items will be provided to volunteers:

Backpack.

Sleeping bag.

Cooking pots.

Bivvie/shelter/tent.
Rations/food parcel.
Clean drinking water.

If you prefer to bring your own sleeping bag, you are welcome to do so.

HOW TO JOIN & ASSIST

These conservation patrols rely on the assistance and financial support of volunteers. Group sizes range from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 8 participants.

3-Day Rhino Conservation Patrol Experience with Trained Dog:

Price: R 2850.00 per person.

Please note: A minimum of 4 participants is required to conduct a trip.

If your group is smaller than this, you are welcome to pay for 4 participants.

Anti-Poaching Patrol Flight Sponsors:

By sponsoring $200, you will have the opportunity to join a 45- minute aerial patrol in a fixed-wing aircraft alongside the Rhino Task Team. The remaining funds will be allocated towards additional aerial patrol hours.
